Can Rishi Sunak become the UK’s third Prime Minister of the year?

Just a few hours before the deadline for the nominations today at 2pm, the former Chancellor has emerged as the favourite to become the next British Prime Minister.

This follows Boris Johnson’s decision last night to pull out of the leadership race.

It has been reported that until the early hours of the morning today, Sunak had the backing of 155 MPs and Penny Mordaunt had 25.

But which are Rishi Sunak’s views on energy policy?

During the Tory leadership hustings in August, Mr Sunak pledged to make the UK energy independent by 2045 “so energy crisis never happens again”.

Sunak promised to establish a new Energy Security Taskforce and a new Department for Energy.

The former Chancellor had previously criticised Liz Truss’ plan for tackling the cost of living crisis – he had stressed that if he won the Tory leadership contest, his priority would be to provide more direct financial support to people in need.

He said: “(Liz) thinks her tax cut is going to help them, which it is not, we are going to, as a Conservative Government, leave millions of incredibly vulnerable people at the risk of real destitution. Now I think that is a moral failure.”

During his campaign in July, Mr Sunak also promised to scrap VAT on household energy bills temporarily.
