Current energy policies in the European Union are “unsustainable in every sense”, according to Maros Sefcovic, Vice President for the Energy Union.

The Energy Union is aimed at forming a single energy market and reforming how Europe produces, transports and uses energy.

The EU imports 55% of the energy it uses and 90% of the housing stock is energy inefficient, according to the European Commission.

It launched its work on the Energy Union yesterday, with a plan to “reorganise” EU energy policies.

Mr Sefcovic said: “Our current energy policies are unsustainable in every sense and in urgent need of reorganisation. Citizens should be at the core of our energy policy. While we have a very ambitious agenda, the momentum is here and now.

“The Energy Union will set the scene for a new way of making energy policy in Europe.”
